dps - "der Plattenspieler" ("The Turntable") is the brainchild of Mr. Willibald Bauer of Germany. The dps was conceived as a culmination of his long experience in using and setting up several other turntable brands. For example, Willi adopted the high torque design.

"The dps turntable has a light platter for low energy storage, the system motor - bearing - platter form as a mass - with a "spring-effect" system that, in this case has utmost rotational stability on the top of its priority list. The bearing has a lot of drag without creating noise, so the cartridge drag becomes a negligible factor in the energy loss equation that determines dynamic behavior under running conditions (cart in modulated groove)."

Only one tonearm can be used on a dps turntable, maximum 10" long.

For Naim Aro tonearm fans, drilling can be made for the optional lift, please refer to the price list above. By the way, it matches superbly with the dps turntable - with a Jan Allaerts cartridge, for example.

The dps is a suspended turntable, without springs, but with proprietary damping that provides a spring-effect.

"The dps turntable looks stylish and compact but performs like a high mass turntable while preserving the life and speed of a small platter. Stable and musical, Willi applies silent high-friction bearing in combination with a very powerful motor (free standing)."

The plinth is of the same material used on the floors of Germany's high-speed trains, but double in thickness. The important factor to note is that besides the material, the careful layering design is what counts more.

The platter is made of high-quality acrylic.

Belt used is made of flat rubber. With the use of threads, no noise from the motor is transferred to the turntable. Willi, however, was able to achieve the proper balance in his design, where the benefits of both rubber and thread are realized. Because of different resonance frequencies in the horizontal and vertical planes, a flat rubber belt design is employed. Furthermore, this has a higher contact area and works well with the high torque design of the dps turntable.

The motor is driven by an AC power supply, with a measured speed stability of < 0.1%.

Although commonly used with a Naim Aro tonearm and Schroder No. 2fW tonearm - a variant of the Schroder Model 2 tonearm, specially made for the dps turntable, with dps wiring and Schroder Reference magnets - one can use any tonearm on a dps turntable, between 9" to 10". The top plinth can be pre-drilled for the tonearm of your choice.

** Note : The only available Schroder tonearm from dps is the Schroder No. 2 fW. See FAQ section.

Several isolation layers with anti-seismic, anti-earthquake suspension material ? Does it work ? Believe it ! Even with its diminutive size, without any form of springs, one can knock on the rack supporting the dps turntable and get no noise transferred to the speakers. "Shock-proof", and such attention to isolation results in superbly quiet playback as well.

Low mass design that performs like high mass ? Yes, Willi Bauer has indeed succeeded in merging the good qualities of high mass design into the inherent low mass design of the dps turntable - i.e. desirable high mass qualities like good bass extension, pitch stability, and assured presentation. All these with a dps-modified Rega RB-250 tonearm. Other good tonearms like the Scheu tonearms, Schroder Model 2, Naim Aro, SME V, Pluto 5A, etc. will provide varying levels of performance.

Like the Scheu Premier turntable, another no-nonsense high-performance turntable performing way above its price, the dps sonically outperforms much more expensive turntables. Check it out to believe.

A Living Voice Mystic Mat, in our opinion, is as always a great turntable mat for many turntables that can accept it, and it will only enhance the listening pleasure. Of course, some may prefer it without the mat, but for us, the Living Voice Mystic Mat is now standard.

Some may wonder at the price difference between the dps 2 and dps 3, when the "only dissimilarity" is in the power supply.

Well, we have to give credit to a sonically ingenious approach by dps designer Willi Bauer.

The dps 2 with its 2-phase PS-2P-NT power supply is by itself a superb turntable. But once the 3-phase dps 3 PS-3P-NT power supply is introduced into the system, the improvement is so significant that it will not be possible to go back to the lower model PS-2P-NT. It proves that turntable power supplies can have considerable impact on a turntable's performance.

Both power supplies are pure analogue sine wave generators, but with the dps 3 power supply having an additional phase. There are 3 power amplifiers, one for each phase (on the dps 2 power supply, there is only 1 power amp). Incidentally, these power amplifiers can play music if used that way, and are sonically great. However, in this application, their use is for powering the 3 phases.

Obviously, this technology is costlier, but the end result is that the dps 3 PS-3P-NT power supply propels the dps turntable's performance to even greater sonic heights.

Users can also easily upgrade later from dps 2 to dps 3 by simply exchanging the power supply.

This is a definitive statement to Bavarian precision and unreserved attention to all details of a turntable system. Result : World-class in a small package.

A very high torque detached Berger Synchronous motor that works hard against a platter which offers a degree of resistance (not a free turning bearing). This unique concepts contradicts the high mass platter camp that proclaims low resistance and high mass to be the answer. The DPS platter shows exceptionally little wow when the stylus tracks through dense passages." The platter size was derived in conjunction with the high torque design, is directly related and optimized for best sound after several tests.

No springs that deteriorate, a self-damped suspension material is used instead, acting as a "spring" and shock absorber at the same time. Material is used in building construction, anti-seismic (anti-earthquake) properties.

All these result in fantastic isolation. One can knock on the supporting table/rack, and hear no noise transferred to the speakers. Shock-proof indeed ! Superbly quiet too.

If the arm is changed in the future, one can drill another hole, or order another top plinth pre-cut for the new tonearm.

The only available Schroder model from dps is the Schroder No. 2fw tonearm. This is a variant of the Schroder Model 2 tonearm, specially made for the dps turntable, with dps wiring and Schroder Reference magnets, with a pertinax armwand.

Of course, other Schroder tonearms can be used on a dps turntable. However, if other Schroder tonearm models are desired, these will not be supplied by dps but by Schroder tonearm distributors (we are also Schroder tonearm distributors).

On the latest July 2006 models, switching between turntable speeds is now done using a spring switch on the power supply.

There is now no need to switch belt positions on the motor pulley. See photo above, only one belt position.

In previous dps turntable models, switching between turntable speeds was done by moving the belt position on the motor pulley.

Please refer to photo above, belt is moved from one position to the other when switching speeds.
